LAKES & CANYONS

Everyone I have ever met
Was a shimmering lake
Or a canyon of ochre dust.

We painted stars on the concrete night
And sang cataract soliloquies
To honour the angels of the city
Those sacrificial ghosts
Ethereal and resplendent
How we were defiled and exquisite and
Wrote songs of fearless and laconic ardour
To the depths
Of the glowing abyss.

Now I am without a home
And wander
Tracing ley lines upon the palms of this land and
Everyone I ever met was a green river
Silted with coincidence
Perhaps one day
I will follow these rivers to the sea
And build an ark of memory
On shiftless sands
How we scratched our names
Amongst the grains and shells.

Now our only enemy is the tide
The inexorable tide
The sonorous and infinite tide
That will one day wash away
Those bright Zurich mornings
When the world was ours.

Of course nothing lives forever
But why must it die
So slowly?
Why must it die
At all?
